Your Questions

What is the story behind Maison Wessman?

Maison Wessman was founded in 2016 by Róbert Wessman, an Icelandic entrepreneur and owner of Château de Saint-Cernin since the early 2000s. Together with Ksenia Wessman, co-owner, he has gradually developed Maison Wessman around several vineyards and French terroirs.

Where does the name Maison Wessman come from?

Maison Wessman takes its name from its founders, the Wessman family. The term “Maison” reflects the ambition to bring together different vineyards, terroirs and creations under a shared vision of wine: reinventing tradition and redefining excellence.

What types of wine does Maison Wessman produce?

Maison Wessman produces a diverse range of wines from several French terroirs. In Bergerac, its vineyards produce red, white, rosé and sweet wines. In the Haute Vallée de Limoux, Bugalys is primarily dedicated to Chardonnay and sparkling wines. Maison Wessman also develops a range of distinctive cuvées in Champagne.

Which grape varieties are grown across Maison Wessman’s vineyards?

Grape varieties vary according to each vineyard and terroir. At Saint-Cernin, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon play a central role. At Bugalys, in the Haute Vallée de Limoux, Chardonnay is the signature grape variety. Other varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Tempranillo, are also used in some of Maison Wessman’s creations.

Who contributes to the winemaking at Maison Wessman?

Maison Wessman works alongside renowned wine professionals. Julien Viaud, oenologist at Rolland & Associés, contributes to the creation of selected cuvées, while Andreas Larsson, Best Sommelier of the World 2007, brings his expertise to Maison Wessman. The vineyards are managed by Lise Sadirac, named Winemaker of the Year 2026.

What role does gastronomy play at Maison Wessman?

Gastronomy is an integral part of the Maison Wessman experience. At Vignoble des Verdots, the Maison Wessman par Thierry Marx restaurant offers a culinary experience closely connected to the vineyard and the wines of the Maison. The restaurant has also been awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide.

Can Maison Wessman wines be aged?

Ageing potential depends on the cuvée and vintage. Some of the great red wines from Saint-Cernin and Les Verdots are crafted to develop over several years in the cellar. Bugalys Chardonnays can be enjoyed young for their freshness, while some of the more structured cuvées can also gain complexity over time.

What food pairings work well with Maison Wessman wines?

Each cuvée has its own character and can complement a variety of dishes. Bergerac reds pair naturally with meats, flavourful dishes and aged cheeses. Chardonnays from Limoux are well suited to fish, seafood and poultry, while Champagnes can be enjoyed both as an aperitif and throughout a gastronomic meal.

Which Maison Wessman wine should I choose as a gift?

The choice will primarily depend on the recipient’s preferences. For lovers of fine red wines, N°1 from Château de Saint-Cernin is an iconic cuvée produced in limited quantities. Chardonnay enthusiasts may prefer Alti Bugalys, while a Maison Wessman Champagne also makes an elegant gift.
